Turkey top official urges respect for scarf

ANKARA, Turkey: Turkish Minister for Foreign Affairs Abdullah Gul,
expected to be elected President in May, called for respect for the
headscarf and stressed commitment to the Muslim nation's system.
Talking to newsmen, he said: "The headscarf is a personal choice and
everyone should respect it."
He was responding when asked whether some may be angry with his wife
Hayrunisa's headscarf when he becomes president.
"In democracies, everyone has individual rights and freedoms. If you
see it (the headscarf) as such, the problem will be resolved."
