Petition to underscore sacred status of Al-Aqsa launched

DOHA, Qatar: Muslim clerics have launched a campaign on Tuesday to stop Israeli excavation work near Al-Aqsa Mosque in Held Jerusalem, vowing to collect one million signatures on a petition to the UN chief.

The clerics rallied in the Qatari capital Doha to launch the drive, which includes plans to sign up to one million people across the Arab and Islamic worlds to the petition that will be presented to United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

Israel's construction work near the Al-Aqsa mosque has sparked violent Palestinian protests and angered Muslims across the world.

HELD JERUSALEM: A Muslim prayer room has been found underneath a ramp near Al-Aqsa mosque in Held Jerusalem. The disclosure, by Israeli government archeologist Yuval Baruch, has fueled new controversy over Israeli excavations at the site.
