HOLY CITY OF KARBALA, Iraq: As the month of mourning, Muharram-ol Haram, nears, preparations for its reception have been finalized in the holy city of Karbala – home to the holy shrines of Chief of Martyrs and grandson of holy Prophet Muhammad (p), Al-Imam Abi Abdellah Al-Hussein (p) and his brother Al-Abbas bin Ali (p).

Muharram-ol Haram is the first lunar month which marks the TRAGEDY OF KARBALA in the year 61 AH when Al-Imam Abi Abdellah Al-Hussein (p) along with his near and dear ones rendered unparalleled sacrifice in the scorching desert of Karbala for defense of Islam and safety of high human values.

With the beginning of Muharram, flocks from across the country and other states start descending at the holy Husseini shrine to commemorate the heart-rending occasion. On Ashura several millions observe the day at the shrine by shedding their blood from heads, chests and backs to signify their deep grief.

This year, 20 January, marks the commencement of Muharram in the holy city.

Director of Karbala police Abo Al-Waleed said that a security plan has been prepared for protection of mourning pilgrims. Some 8,000 policemen will be deployed in the city. Iraqi Army will also help in implementation of the plan.
