Kashmiris walk on embers following Hazrat Zainab (AS)
By: Nizam Hussain
KHANDA, Held Kashmir: Two days prior to Muharram, people from
different parts of Indian-held Kashmir converged at Khanda, 15
kilometres south of Srinagar, to participate in ‘walking on embers’
following the sunnat of Hazrat Zainab binte Ali (AS) who along with
other chaste ladies and children of Holy Prophet (SAWW)’s holy family
ran from one burning tent to the other after the forces of Yazid set
their camps on fire after martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS).

Bare-feet young boys walked over embers to mark the martyrdom of
Imam Hussain Ibn Ali, grandson of Prophet Mohammad (SAWW). The
residents of this village began this traditional ritual some 38 years
ago.
Organisers select 14 boys out of a group of 50 or 100 who offer Namaaz.
Although, they are in no way trained to walk barefooted on embers, on
the occasion of mass congregation prior to Muharram, they perform this
ritual with no signs of pain.
"Over the years, spirit of people has increased. People want to see
this very closely. In spite of the fact that it is difficult to walk
on fire, youngsters with faith in God, walk on it," said Ghulam
Hussain, organiser.

"Knowledge is
better than wealth because it protects you while you have to
guard wealth. it decreases if you keep on spending it but the
more you make use of knowledge ,the more it increases . what you
get through wealth disappears as soon as wealth disappears but
what you achieve through knowledge will remain even after you."MORE
