HOLY CITY OF NAJAF, Iraq: Al-Ausaat Al-Hozawiyah wal Ilmiyah (Hoza and scholarly circles) in the holy city of Najaf have strongly condemned Britain's award of a knighthood to notorious author Salman Rushdie as an offend to Muslim sentiments.

Foundfer of Islamic Republic of Iran Ayatullah Ruhollah Al-Moosawi Al-Khomeini had issued a 1989 fatwa, or religious edict, saying author’s killing is must because his book, "The Satanic Verses," insulted Prophet Muhammad (peace of Allah be upon him and his holy progeny).

On Saturday, Britain announced the knighthood in an honors list timed for the official celebration of the queen's 81st birthday.
