Muslims protest prophet cartoon by Swedish newspaper

By: Nabil Raza

STOCKHOLM, Sweden: The Jordanian government has denounced Monday the publication in Sweden of a cartoon of the noblest Messenger of Allah, Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), warning it could undermine inter-faith dialogue and co-existence.

"The publication of this cartoon, which seeks to attack the character of the Messenger Mohammed, is unacceptable, rejected and condemned," government spokesman Nasser Jawdeh said.

The Islamic Republic of Iran and Pakistan both summoned Swedish diplomats to protest against the caricature, which was also condemned by the 57-nation Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC).

On Friday, Swedish Muslims demonstrated against the newspaper Nerikes Allehanda and demanded its chief editor apologize.

The cartoon was made by Swedish artist Lars Vilks.

"We want to show Nerike's Allehanda that Muslims in this city are upset over what happened," Jamal Lamhamdi, chairman of the Islamic cultural center in Orebro, told Swedish public radio. Orebro is a city of about 100,000 people 125 miles west of Stockholm.

The newspaper's editor-in-chief, Ulf Johansson, met with Lamhamdi but refused to apologize for the cartoon, which was part of an Aug. 19 editorial criticizing several Swedish art galleries for refusing to display a series of Vilks' drawings showing Mohammad (peace be upon him and his holy progeny).
