By: Ali Al-Qadumi

MANAMA, Bahrain: The Jaaffari Endowment Directorate (JED) in Bahrain is in charge of running 725 mosques across the country, a new report revealed.

The updated figures feature in a newly-issued JED booklet Our Mosques.

The Northern Governorate has the lion's share with 339 mosques compared to 183 in the Central Governorate, 159 in Manama and 41 in Muharraq. The Southern Governorate has just two mosques.

A "rich category" of three-per cent of the mosques post an annual revenue exceeding BD10,000.

The second category with revenues below BD10,000 includes 103 mosques - 14pc.

The third "weak" category includes 129 mosques with annual revenues below BD1,000.

A total of 468 mosques (65pc) are described as "poor", lacking any source of revenues.

A survey has also revealed that 83pc of the Jaaffari-run mosques need aid and extra funds to conduct necessary maintenance and cover operational costs.
