Bahraini Shias protest articles on their religious practices

By: Ali Al-Qadumi

MANAMA, Bahrain: Protesting newspaper articles deemed insulting to Bahrain’s top Shia cleric and Shia religious practices in general, more than 12,000 people marched Thursday in this tiny Sunni-ruled Shia-majority Gulf country.

The demonstrators marched along the highway just outside the capital of Manama, chanting slogans in support of the cleric, Sheik Isa Qassim.

No violence was reported during the two-hour protest.

The articles have been published over the past two weeks in the Al-Watan daily and hardliners opposed to Shia-Sunni brethren unity are thought to be behind them.
