Islamic art Museum in Qatar - an architectural masterpiece

By: Nabil Raza

LONDON, Britain: A museum dedicated to Islamic arts will be opened in the Gulf state of Qatar, representatives of the project said during a press conference in London.

On the 22nd of November 2008, the ‘Museum of Islamic Art’, intended to be one of the biggest of its kind in the region, will open its doors to the public.

The project aims “to create a national and an international resort for research, learning and creativity. The museum would be a centre for students, scholars and visitors from around the world to share in the history and the culture of Islamic art,” said Abdullah Al-Najjar, CEO of the Museum of Islamic Art.

It also intends to help the State of Qatar to establish itself as “a pioneering cultural centre,” according to Al-Najjar.

“The Museum of Islamic Art is an architectural masterpiece and will become a landmark in Doha,” said Al-Najjar.

The museum, designed by award winning architect Ieo Ming Pei, is built on a man made island that is connected to Doha’s Corniche by two pedestrian bridges.

The design of the building is inspired by the Ahmed ibn Tuoun mosque in Egypt.
