Bahrain: Shi'ite opposition distances from Iran

By: Ali Al-Qadumi

ABU DHABI: Shiite opposition in Bahrain has sought to distance itself from Iran. More than 70 percent population of the tiny kingdom is Shiite.

The largest Shiite opposition party, accused of being financed by Tehran, has stressed that it remained a legitimate political movement.

Al Wefaq, with 17 members in Bahrain's 40-seat parliament, was responding to Iranian pressure on the Gulf Cooperation Council state, headquarters of the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet.

"Bahrain is an Arab country and no one should dispute this fact," Al Wefaq parliamentary whip Mohammed Al Mizal said.
