US sailors who stole ALAM (black flag) in Bahrain face suspension

By: Ali Al-Qadumi

MANAMA, Bahrain: A group of US Navy sailors who allegedly stole an Alam (black flag) of commander of Husseini Army in Karbala in 61 AH Al-Abbas bin Ali (AS) could be suspended from duty, reports said.

The 15 suspects, who are now being investigated, may also be forced to return home or have their wages docked - if found guilty of the crime. Police were called in the early hours of Tuesday after the off-duty sailors entered the yard of a house in Hidd and snatched the flag, commemorating the martyrdom anniversary of one of Prophet Mohammed (peace be on him and his holy progeny)'s grandson Imam Hussain (peace be on him).

US Navy spokesman Lieutenant Nathan Christensen confirmed base officials had launched an investigation.

"The US Navy deeply regrets the events that took place on the morning of February 10," he said.

"Apologies were made by US Navy leadership here to the family and immediate action was taken to ensure that all personnel assigned to the base are aware of the impact of the actions of their fellow sailors.

"Full restitution will be made to the family for the damage caused by the sailors.

"Their actions are very regrettable and do not reflect the great relationship between the US Navy and Bahrain."

Lt Christensen declined to say whether the sailors involved included some women or whether the group may also be prosecuted by local police.

He also refused to say if the theft had been spontaneous or premeditated.

"The incident is under investigation and all individuals will be held accountable for their actions," he said.
