Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk … Saudi wants politics kept out of hajj

By: Abdulali

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia: After Iran’s supreme leader Ayatullah Ali Khamenei advised his people to promote the Iranian point of view at hajj, a top Saudi official warned against mixing politics with the forthcoming annual pilgrimage to the holy city of Makkah.

In an interview with daily Al-Watan paper, Saudi Hajj Minister Fouad al-Farsi said the hajj should not be used for a special agenda or for political purposes. He didn’t mention Iran by name.

Iran’s supreme leader criticized what he called “insults” and actions against pilgrims who visit Shiite shrines during the pilgrimage season.

“These actions are against unity and in line with the objectives and demands of the US and foreign intelligence services. The Saudi government must confront such actions,” Khamenei told a group of Iranian hajj officials this week.

Shiite pilgrims have always been prevented from praying at shrines during hajj season and throughout the year.
