Hakim says Iraqis will try Saddam; UK opposes death penalty By: Nabil Raza/ Hamoud Kufi PARIS/BAGHDAD: Iraq’s interim leader Sayyid Abdul Aziz Al-Hakim said captured Saddam Hussein would be tried by Iraqi judges in a special court established to deal with war crimes cases. “Saddam Hussein will be judged by Iraqi judges and the tribunal will work and be situated in Iraq under the supervision of international experts,” said Al-Hakim. Meanwhile, one Iraqi Governing Council member Mouwafak Ar-Rabiyi said that the former dictator could be tried “in the next few weeks”' and could be executed if convicted while other council members are of the view that a trial would likely begin later. Ar-Rabiyi noted that the US-led occupation authorities have suspended the death penalty until there's a sovereign government, which is expected by July 1 under a deal with the US-led coalition. “We will get sovereignty on the 30th of June, and I can tell you, he could be executed on the 1st of July,” he said. Separately, US closest Iraq war ally Britain said Monday it would play “no part” in any trial of Saddam Hussein that might lead to his death.
