Al-Hakim airs complaints over flaws in constitution By: Hamoud Kufi BAGHDAD, Iraq: Sayyid Abdul Aziz Al-Hakim, leader of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq and a member of the Iraqi Governing Council, described the nation's freshly-signed interim constitution as a “huge achievement,” but aired complaints over flaws in the law. Speaking at a news conference Tuesday in Baghdad a day after the historic signing of the constitution, Al-Hakim said the most important thing was to achieve a quick end to the US-led occupation. Abduel Aziz was one of four members who sent only representatives for the signing. He also defended criticism of the document by Ayatullah Ali As-Sistani, saying the senior cleric was voicing legitimate concerns and not calling for revolt. The Ayatullah issued a religious edict on Monday saying the document will gain legitimacy only when adopted by an elected assembly. END |
