HOLY NAJAF, Iraq: The United Nations Special Envoy to Iraq, Ashraf Qazi, held a meeting with Al-Marje’ Al-Aa`la Grand Ayatullah Sayyed Ali Al-Husseini As-Sistani on Thursday asking him to encourage Iraqis to vote in general election scheduled on 15 December.

"It's the third time that I have met Sayyed Sistani, to whom I conveyed the greetings of the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan," Ashraf told reporters following his talks with the leader.

Qazi said he asked Sistani to "bless and encourage the participation of all Iraqis in the political process and elections free from violence".

"The Marjaya (Iraq's religious leadership) blessed the work of the UN and encouraged us to go forward to help a new peaceable Iraq emerge," he added.

Some 15.5 million Iraqis are eligible to vote in the next week polls for the first four-year parliament after dictator Saddam ouster.
