Iraqis did not celebrate unprecedented victory for Muharram By: Hamoud Kufi BAGHDAD, Iraq: Mo’mineen of Iraq have not celebrated their decisive victory in the country’s historic elections as vote results coincided with the period of universal mourning to mark the martyrdom anniversary of Al-Imam Al-Hussein bin Ali (p), grandson of holy Prophet Muhammad (p). United Iraqi Alliance, backed by Marjaiyah Diniyah (the top religious authority) Ayatullah Sayyed Ali As-Sistani and led by Sayyed Abdul Aziz Al-Hakim, won 48 percent of the vote in elections on January 30. Shias, long oppressed under Saddam, have gained unprecedented power but instead of celebrating the occasion they preferred Husseini mourning. END |
