Security beefed up in Iraq ahead of Muharram By: Ismail Zabeeh HOLY CITY OF KARBALA, Iraq: Iraqi nation is preparing under heavy security measures to commemorate the tragedy of Karbala some 1,400 years ago when Chief of Martyrs Al-Imam Al-Hussein along with his near and dear ones presented unparallel sacrifice to elevate Islamic principles and save high human values. Iraqi security officers have taken positions near the holy shrines of Al-Imam Al-Hussein (p) and Al-Abbas (p) in the holy city of Karbala, Al-Imam Ali bin Abi Talib (p) in the holy city of Najaf, Al-Imam Mussa Al-Kazem (p) and Al-Imam Muhammad Taqy Al-Jawwad (p) in the holy city of Kazemiyah, and Al-Imam Ali Al-Hadi (p) and Al-Imam Hasan Al-Askary (p) in the holy city of Samra a few days ahead of Muharram which will begin on 10 or 11 February depending on the sighting of crescent. Muharram is the first month of Islamic calendar. Grand mourning programs will be held throughout the country and particularly in the holy city of Karbala till 8th Rabi’ al-Awwal, the third Islamic month. Several millions devotees from across the globe are expected to descend at Holy Karbala to mark Ashoura - 10th of Muharram. END |
