BAGHDAD, Iraq: Death toll in Friday’s escalating violence in different cities of Iraq climbed to over 70, and separately families identified 14 blindfolded executed men who were found buried at a garbage dump in Baghdad.

In the deadliest blast, a suicide car bomber struck a vegetable market in a southern Iraqi town of Suwayra, leaving at least 58 people martyred and wounding several dozens, police and hospital officials said.

In Saddam’s hometown of Tikrit, a suicide car bomber blew up his vehicle beside a minibus carrying policemen, martyring nearly one dozen and wounding several, local police said.

In Baghdad, residents alerted police after they saw bodies being buried through a bulldozer in a vacant lot in the Kisra wa Atash district. Police found the corpses of 14 men. Some of the victims, blindfolded, hands bound and wearing civilian clothes and left in a garbage dump, had been shot in the head.

"When the police arrived on the scene, the driver of the bulldozer ran away. We found two bodies on the spot and 12 more when we dug up the area," an official said.

Families identified the victims as farmers who disappeared recently on their way to a market to sell their produce.
