By: Ismail Zabeeh

HOLY NAJAF, Iraq: Iraq's revered Al-Marje’ Al-A`ala Sayyed Ali Al-Husseini As-Sistani has called on Iraqis to endorse the new constitution in Saturday's referendum after political leaders agreed on amendments aimed at winning the backing of all.

Aides of the Marje’ based at the shrines of Holy Najaf and Karbala conveyed the statement.

“Anyone who contacts the grand Ayatullah's office is told that he instructs Iraqis to vote 'yes'” in Saturday's crucial vote, said an official from his office in Holy Najaf – home to the holy shrine of Al-Imam Ali bin Abi Talib (p).

Political leaders announced on Wednesday some modifications to the constitution and an agreement to consider further revisions after new elections in December.

His representative in the holy city of Karbala Sayed Ahmed Safi said: “The Iraqi faithful must go to the polling stations to vote in favor of the test after the changes approved on Wednesday which eliminate all the arguments” against the constitution.

It is Ayatullah Sistani’s most direct show of support for the charter and it is expected to carry great weight with Iraqis.
