Over 67 pilgrims martyred, hurt in Iraq shrine blast

KUFA, Iraq: A bomb in a minibus exploded near the holy shrine of Sahabi Maitham At-Tamar (may Allah be pleased with him) in the southern Iraqi holy city of Kufa martyring over a dozen pilgrims and wounding more than 55. A mosaic-lined wall of the shrine was also damaged.

Death toll is rising.

The attack occurred about 7:30 a.m. near the shrine and just down the street from the revered Kufa mosque.

According to Iraq's council of ministers most of the victims were Iranian pilgrims.

Tehran condemned the attack and called on the Iraqi government to bring those responsible to justice. It also blamed US-led forces for failing to provide security.

Police at the scene said the suicide attacker was driving a minivan behind two buses and detonated his explosives as the Iraqi and Iranian pilgrims were getting off.

On Tuesday, Maqam Al-Imam Ali bin Mussa Ar-Ridha (peace be upon him) in the city of Mosul was destructed through a bomb blast.
