Iraq Friday prayers clerics call for Saddam quick execution

By: Ismail Zabeeh

HOLY KARBALA, Iraq: Friday prayer leaders in Iraq have called for the speedy execution of ousted dictator Saddam in their sermons, saying it would end the reign of terror currently gripping the country.

During Friday prayers at the shrine of Imam Hussein (AS), a representative of Ayatullah Ali As-Sistani called on for the former despot to be executed in the holy city of Karbala.

“I wish to hang Saddam between the two shrines in Karbala,” Sheikh Ahmed As-Safi said. “Injuries will not heal unless the scaffold is placed here to carry out the sentence.”

“All those who think that the execution would inflame the situation are wrong -- rather it will be the opposite,” he added.

Saddam was sentenced Sunday by the Iraqi High Tribunal in Baghdad to death by hanging.
