A glance at Samarra shrine

The holy Askariya Shrine in the holy city of Samarra is among
Iraq's most sacred sites and was famous for its towering golden dome,
which was destroyed in a bombing on Feb. 22, 2006. June 13, 2007
blasts brought down the shrine's two holy minarets.
The sacred shrine contains the holy graves of the 10th and 11th
infallible imams from he progeny of holy Prophet Muhammad (S), Ali Al-Hadi
(A) and his son Hassan Al-Askari.
The holy shrine compound also is near the place where the last of the
12 imams, Mohammed Al-Mahdi Al-Montazar (A), disappeared.
The landmark golden dome was completed in 1905.
