BAGHDAD, Iraq: Marking the auspicious occasion of birth anniversary of Commander of Faithful Al-Imam Ali b. Abi Talib (AS) on Rajab 13, civilian flights will start this month at a former military airport in the central Iraqi holy city of Najaf.

A statement quoting Najaf governor Assa'ad Abukelel said Al-Hamza airfield will be inaugurated as a civilian airport on July 20.

"The runway has been successfully tested. The departure and arrival terminals are also ready," he said. "We have also signed a contract with a Kuwaiti company to operate the airport for a month when it will train Iraqi staff in managing the facility."

The new airdrome named "Al-Imam Ali International Airport" is expected to boost the number of pilgrims.

Millions of pilgrims flock every year to Najaf that houses the holy shrine of Al-Imam Ali (AS).
