HOLY CITY OF NAJAF, Iraq: Millions of mourners gathered at the holy shrine of Al-Imam Ali bin Abi Talib (peace be on him) in the holy city of Najaf on Tuesday February 24 Safar 28 to commemorate the anniversary of martyrdom of chief of Prophets Prophet Muhammad bin Abdullah (peace be on him and his holy progeny).

It was Safar (the second lunar month) 28, according to authentic traditions when Prophet Muhammad Al-Mostafa (peace be on him and his holy progeny) kissed martyrdom as a result of poison given to him.

Holding green, black and red standards, the mourners reached in Najaf some on foot while some others on vehicles and planes to observe the sad occasion and to extend their condolence to his first infallible successor, son-in-law and cousin Al-Imam Ali Al-Mortadha (peace be on him).

Security was tightened for safety of pilgrims. 30 thousand security personnel were deployed in the city.

Food was cooked in giant pots at streets to facilitate the pilgrims of Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him and his holy progeny).
