Ayat Husayn Sadr: Shia make up 75% of Iraq population

By: Ismail Zabeeh

KAZIMAYN SHARIFAYN, Iraq: One of the prominent religious scholars in Kazimayn Sharifayn, Ayatullah As-Sayyid Husayn As-Sadr, has said Shia make up 70-75% of the total population in Iraq.

In an interview with Kuwaiti newspaper Ar-Rayi Al-Aam, the Ayatullah said: “We form majority and it is 70 to 75 percent despite that there are those saying that we are less than that, anyway, if our percentage was less but we offered 100 % of the martyrs.”

“Prisons of Saddam were filled with our great Scholars and best of the youth,” he said.

Speaking on relations with the neighboring countries, Ayatullah As-Sadr cleared: “We wish to have good relations with all our neighbors based on love and respect, but we wish that they leave Iraq and its affair, we have ability to take on our shoulder the responsibility of our country without need of another country or another nation.”

“Our relations with Iran are relations of neighborhood, cordiality and respect, and this is what she should be on it, not more,” he added.

In order to tackle the problems faced by Muslims, he urged the need of sticking to the Book and Itrah (progeny of Prophet Muhammad, PBUH&HP) and after this sticking to the one who represents Itrah, and they are Fuqaha and Maraje who follow the line of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP) and infallible Imams (PBUT).
