Karbala Ayat calls for peaceful defense of holy sites

By: Almodarresi office/ Mohamed Ali

HOLY CITY OF KARBALA/ WASHINGTON: Ayatullah As-Sayyid Muhammad Taqi Al-Modarresi from the holy city of Karbala has said that some of the powers are trying to exploit the situation in the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala for political reasons irrespective of the holiness of the two cities and interests of their residents."

In a statement received by Jafariyanews from the Karbala office of Al-Modarresi, Ayatullah Al-Modarresi called Muslims the world over to join in defense of the holy sites in Iraq through peaceful means and make the oncoming Friday a day to express solidarity with holy places and pray for ending of ordeal of the people of the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala.

His statement came as Hassan Nasrallah, leader of Lebanese Hizbollah warned on Tuesday that sacrilege of honor of holy sites in Iraq would spark an intifada and no one knows its extent and effect, and in Tehran on Wednesday Iranian protestors attacked British embassy with bombs. According to BBC the protestors were chanting slogans against US forces for fighting against As-Sadr militiamen.

Earlier in this week, Iran's supreme leader Ayatullah Ali Khamenei weighed in on the side of Moqtada As-Sadr in Iraq. According to the online edition of New Hampshire's daily newspaper the Union Leader Sunday News Khamenei's remarks, made in a speech to theology students and broadcast on Iranian radio, were the first harsh criticism issued by Iran about the ongoing US offensive against militiamen of As-Sadr, who is wanted by US forces on murder charges.

The daily wrote that about 100 students threw rocks at the British Embassy in Tehran shortly after Khamenei spoke.

Quoting US and Iraqi officials, the paper said that As-Sadr is financed and backed by officials of the Revolutionary Guards and Iranian intelligence agencies.
