Red Cross asks for $81 million for Lebanon

By: Nabil Raza

GENEVA: The international Red Cross appealed Friday for $81 million to help Lebanon.

Life is becoming "unbearably dangerous" for civilians who have been trapped by the violence, the International Committee of the Red Cross said.

Resources and access to water and basic services are also very limited, the ICRC said in a statement, while medical evacuations and aid operations are very difficult and cannot meet the population's needs.

The ICRC's top priority in southern Lebanon is ensuring the safety of civilians and securing safe access for those engaged in medical and other humanitarian activities, Kraehenbuehl said reporters at the organization's Geneva headquarters.

The funds from the appeal will help expand Red Cross food, clean water and health programs and facilities for some 650,000 people, as well as up to 5,000 wounded.
