Hindus, Muslims join hands to flay aggression on sacred sites By: Nizam Hussain
LUCKNOW, India: Thousands of demonstrators and hundreds of Muslim religious leaders were joined on Sunday by Hindu priests and holy men in Lucknow to protest against the presence of US forces in the Iraqi holy cities of Najaf and Karbala and attacking of sacred shrines. Carrying banners and placards, they shouted slogans against the atrocities on Iraqi inmates at different jails including the Abu Gharib prison at the hands of US troops, and American aggression on the sacred shrines belonging to Ahlul Bayt of holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (peace of Allah be upon him & his pure progeny). They demanded the end to prisoners abuse; the immediate release of Iraqi prisoners; and the withdrawal of US-led forces from the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala as well as from the whole Iraqi soil. A cleric Shahi Islam at the demonstration said: “America has been committing atrocities everywhere. First they attacked Afghanistan and tried to impose their rule there. Then they attacked Iraq and then not only that, they have also started attacking holy shrines with an aim to destroy them.”
“We are taking out this march today to condemn American atrocities on our holy places and our Hindu brothers are also with us today,” he said. The protestors also torched a replica of the White House during the rally. The protest is the latest in the series witnessed across the Muslim populated cities at growing resentment against the US. Muslims in India have been consistently voicing their concern on the US-led war and say the prisoner abuse was only a small example of what they termed as America's hegemony.
