A brief look at Imam Zaynul Abideen (AS)’s life

Hazrat Imam Ali Yibnil Hussein Zaynul Abideen (AS) is the Fourth Apostolic Imam. His epithet was Abu Muhammad and was popularly titled as Zaynul Abideen (AS). The mother of this Holy Imam was the royal personage, Shahr Banu, the daughter of King Yazdgerd of Persia. Imam Zaynul Abideen (AS) spent the first two years of his infancy in the lap of his grandfather Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS) and then for twelve years he had the gracious patronage of his uncle, the second Holy Imam al-Hassan ibn Ali (AS).

It is reported that once Hash'sham bin Abdul Malik Marwan went for pilgrimage of Bayt-Ullah but when he wanted to perform Tawaf he could not due to deep crowd. Suddenly he saw Hazrat Ali Ibnil Hussain Imam Zayn-ul Abedeen (A.S) came to Bayt-Ullah. People made way for Imam and he (AS) after Tawaf kissed Hajre Aswad (Black Stone of the Ka'aba). They (people) were doing this in magnification of him and in exaltation of his rank.

* A Mujahid who is martyred for Allah's cause does not deserve as much reward as a person who chooses not to sin despite having the power to do so. Such a person may even become one of the chaste angels. (Saheefa-e-Sajadia)

Imam Hassan (AS) said, 'on the Friday night I saw my mother (Fatima (as)) standing in her arch of prayer. She was continuously kneeling and performing prostration till the dawn broke. I would hear her pray for the faithful men and women, but she did not at all pray for herself. I said, 'Oh mother why did you not pray for yourself like you prayed for others?' so she replied, 'Oh my son, first thy neighbour and there after your own house.'

It is related that when the prophet returned from his farewell pilgrimage, conscious that his departure to the eternal world was near, he was continually addressing the people, warning them to beware of seditions which would arise after his death, and exhorting them not to withdraw from his form of faith, and not do evil against the divine religion. He bade them beware of leaguing against the rights of his family, but to render them support and obedience, which were so obligatory on them to yield.
